The Full Gold Sovereign Coin 2024 features the well-known St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci. This design was first used on the sovereign coin back in 1817. On the front side of the coin, there’s an uncrowned portrait of King Charles III, created by the sculptor Martin Jennings.

The gold sovereign coin has a significant place in British history. The first one was minted in 1489 under King Henry VII. The modern version of the Sovereign, with Pistrucci’s ‘St George & the Dragon’ design on the reverse, was introduced in 1817. Because of its long-standing history, the UK Sovereign coin is considered the main coin of The Royal Mint.

Gold Sovereigns are Free of Capital Gain Tax (CGT), which makes them an ideal product for British investors.

History of Gold Sovereign

Since the year 650, several mints across Great Britain minted coins. Around the year 1540, most of the mints closed and the Royal Mint was the only mint in operation.

Great Britain abandoned the striking of coins by hand in 1663 and introduced new manufacturing processes. The use of screw presses and horse-drawn rolling mills enabled the manufacture of what became “milled coins”.
